NASCAR.. An Oliver Stone Production?

Week ten saw the Winston Cup guys going westbound and down loaded up and trucking to the left coast. Ten different winners in the first ten weeks has helped make this the strangest NASCAR season on record. That amazing streak could continue to grow since the strong teams of Tony Stewart, Mike Skinner, and Terry Labonte and upstarts like Matt Kenseth are yet to visit victory lane despite some strong runs. This strangest of seasons with its many plot twists and turns explains why Fox TV was so hot after NASCAR. The script writers of such Fox epics as Beverly Hills 90210 are jealous. Where else but NASCAR would the "Gang That Couldn't Gas Straight" win while sweating out a possible suspension.

Jeremy Mayfield's team went to California with a dark cloud hovering over them. A fuel sample taken at Taladega tested funny fueling (Pun intended) two weeks of debate on whether their pole winning performance was illegally obtained. Not since Ben Johnson failed his drug test at the Seoul Olympics has the sports world talked so much about chemistry. Will they be suspended? Will there be huge fines? Will they be told to stand in the corner? Just as Camden Yards has captured the "old style" charm of yesteryear in baseball, it is high time we see a new track follow that same formula. The quality of racing often suffers at these new palaces and despite some exciting moments this race was nothing special.

Mike Skinner flexed his muscles on pole day as twenty three drivers bettered the old track record. Once again Chevy teams associated with the "RAD" partnership outperformed their fellow Chevy teams with the only two top ten starting spots for the Bowtie Brigade. Good old DW had them dancing in the aisles with his seventh place qualifying effort. The wide open relatively flat track at California Speedway gives the boys lots of room to maneuver but we only saw a few segments of close side by side racing for the lead. Mike Skinner and Matt Kenseth took turns dominating the race. Matt had it all but wrapped up
