Could Have Been a Millionaire

Wise men through the years have issued the same sage advice worded in different ways. Always, no wait it was never, no it was always trust your psychic. (My apologies to Steve Martin for stealing his joke) I could have been a millionaire and I would not even have had to utter those famous words 'that's my final answer' to win the millions. I should have listened to my psychic.

It was a cold January night as I sat perched at my computer checking out the latest NASCAR rumors and stats on Jayski. Convinced I was now armed with all the information I needed to make my fantasy racing dreams come true I set forth on a little random surfing. I stumbled across an advertisement for Madam Zelda the Racing Psychic. At a mere $1.99 per minute (first five minutes free naturally) she was a bargain. I figured she might just give me the edge I needed to clean up this year on my NASCAR handicapping. Why didn?t I listen?

Since I am a naturally born skeptic I asked her how long she had been a racing psychic. She told me she started back in 1992 when she had the vision of the letters AK standing on top of a Winston Cup Championship trophy made of cheese. She went on to mention an 8 year streak picking the champion with a 92% winning percentage overall since that fateful day of her first dream. I just had to ask her how the NASCAR 2000 season would turn out.

When she told me that the number 8 would have twice the importance to start the season I figured I had been had. Even I knew the 88 car of Dale Jarrett would be strong at Daytona. "Oh no young man you just don't understand", she replied. "Eight times in eight different ways the NASCAR 2000 season will start with not a rainbow in sight." It took me a minute to decipher her riddle. (At $1.99 per minute I tend to think fast) It became obvious that what she meant was that the first eight races would be won by eight different drivers and Jeff Gordon would not be one of them. Oh sure everyone knew the 24 team might struggle early with all the changes but to be shut out in eight races was unthinkable. Also in the fifty plus years of NASCAR history we have never had eight races to start a season without a repeat winner. I was intrigued but remained skeptical.
