NASCAR Week in Review

Hotlanta Race Review

NASCAR must have given up bad luck for Lent since this week's adventure to Atlanta Motor Speedway went great!! Oh sure, the Busch race took longer to complete than a Larry McReynold's lecture on aerodynamics, but they did finish the race. Sunday the CUP stars put on an incredible show despite missing "Happy Hour" the day before. This might have been the best CUP race in a few years as seventeen drivers swapped the lead 30 times. There were more plot twists than an ABC mini-series too. Was the nose job on the Chevy enough to help? Was Jeff Burton going to dominate? Would Mike Skinner get his first win? Did that old man Earnhardt still have what it takes? Would Mr Atlanta Bobby Labonte win again? One by one the contenders fell by the wayside leaving a few surprises up front. Tweaking the nose on the Chevy was more than enough to fix what supposedly ailed them. If that doesn't stop the aero-whining I might have to switch to CART, then at least I won't understand it when the drivers whine. If this race didn't thrill you I seriously recommend seeing a doctor because I think you are missing a pulse. Those last few laps had me on the edge of my seat and cheering. In the end old age and treachery (Dale Earnhardt) beat out youth (Bobby Labonte) in one of the closest races in NASCAR history by 0.01 second!! Mark Martin, Steve Park, and Joe Nemechek rounded out the top five. A tip of the hat goes to Chad Little and Todd Bodine for top ten finishes. Chad needed a strong run and Todd certainly overachieved in the underfunded 91 car.

Surprise of the Week: Todd Bodine's 7th place finish

Fix-A-Flat Award: Jeff Burton's right rear exploded at the wrong time. thank goodness he wasn't hurt.

Geritol Award: Dale Earnhardt showed that perhaps an eighth title isn't out of reach after all.
