Chevy gets second in a row©
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series headed into Memphis over the weekend for the Memphis 200 at Memphis Motorsports Park on Saturday with Jack Sprague looking to take his second win in a row and his second consecutive win in Memphis. Early on it looked as if Sprague may be well on his way to accomplishing those goals as he was the fastest in practices, started on the pole, and led the most laps.
Things turned sour for the two-time truck series champion on lap 138 when a faulty oil line cause the Net Zero Chevy to hit the wall on turn three. Sprague ended up 23rd on the day.
Instead, Saturday was Dennis Setzer's day. Setzer took the checkers and visited victory lane for the first time in 2001. The win not only was Setzer's first of the season, but it was also his first win in a Chevrolet and the first win for Morgan-Dollar Motorsports.
Setzer's win gave Chevrolet its 82nd win in the truck series since the circuits beginnings in 1995. Chevy can still bost the most wins of any manufacturer in the series, winning 53 percent of races run in the truck series.
Twenty-year-old Brian Rose made his truck series debut, piloting the no. 51 Chevy for Ware Racing. His debut was cut short when he was caught up in an accident with Carlos Contreras. Rose plans to run the remainder of the truck schedule for Ware.
All in all, it was a good day for Chevrolet. The manufacturer looks as if it may be on a run of its own after putting an end to Dodge's dominance early on in 2001. Setzer's win was Chevy's second consecutive win and five drivers, including Setzer, rode Chevy's to top-10 finishes, the most of the three manufacturers. Ford, on the other hand, still seems to be lagging behind a little, placing only two trucks in the top-10 in Memphis.
On of Ford's two top-10 truck was piloted by last year's Craftsman Truck Series champion and this year Busch Series rookie Greg Biffle. Biffle returned to the truck series in an attempt by Roush Racing to improve its lackluster performance in the truck series this year. Biffle's return brought Roush a ninth-place finish. Fellow former Roush truck driver and current Winston Cup Rookie Kurt Busch will pilot a Roush truck next weekend at Milwaukee for the same reason.
The top-10 in Memphis included:
1. Dennis Setzer
2. Scott Riggs
3. Joe Ruttman
