Looking to next season

The 2000 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season ended in record fashion. Kurt Busch won the season finale Motorola 200 at California Speedway with an average speed of 144.26 mph to go in the record books for fastest completion of the race. "When they told me there was only 27 laps to go, I couldn't believe it," Busch said. The talented young driver also broke the record for most wins in a season by a rookie with his fourth win.

With the win in California, Busch locked up a runner-up finish in the final standings, second only to Roush Racing teammate Greg Biffle. In just one season, Busch made sure he made his mark in the truck series before moving to Winston Cup.

Joe Ruttman came home with a second place finish in California, followed by Jack Sprague in third, Biffle in fourth, and Bryan Reffner rounding out the top-five. Spragues third-place finish enabled him to hold on to fifth position in the point race. Sprage has never ended a season out of the top-five even though he has competed every season since the beginning of the series in 1995.

The top-10 point-getters for 2000 were:

  • 1. Greg Biffle
  • 2. Kurt Busch
  • 3. Andy Houston
  • 4. Mike Walace
  • 5. Jack Sprague
  • 6. Joe Ruttman
  • 7. Dennis Setzer
  • 8. Randy Tolsma
  • 9. Bryan Reffner
  • 10. Steve Grissom

The 2001 season will have somewhat of a different complexion than previous seasons. A series that started as mainly a short-track series will compete in 18 events on tracks a mile or longer.

Included on the 24 race 2001 schedule will be a first-time visit to the storied Darlington Raceway. The trucks will also visit South Boston Speedway, a track that has deep-rooted history in the Busch Series. Las Vegas will also return to the schedule after an absence in 2000.
