A Day at the Races

May 20, 2002 - © Bobby Bailey

This past weekend I had the opportunity to go to the Nazareth Busch Series race. I was at the track at 9:00 p.m. I got into the souvenir area of the Nazareth Speedway and found 5 NASCAR Busch Series drivers signing autographs. I remember from years past that NASCAR Winston Cup Drivers don't sign autographs at 9:30 a.m. on race day. Unless I wasn't looking for any when I went, then it came to me I was at the Busch race not a NASCAR Winston Cup Race a Busch Series race.

My day at the races started at 7:00 a.m. in the morning, I had to get up and get ready so I could get there for 9:00 a.m. I arrived at the track at 9:30 a.m. and saw Greg Biffle, Scott Riggs, Hank Parker Jr., and Larry Foyt signing autographs for the fans. The line for Greg Biffle autograph was from the rear of the souvenir hauler all the way to the front of the hauler. I wasn't surprised that his autograph line was so long. Then at 11:00 p.m., I ate lunch. After sitting in my dad's truck for an hour we got out and then we went into the stands. About 12:30 p.m. the Busch Series drivers where introduced to the fans. Then 1:00 p.m. the green flag falls on the Stacker 2 200.

At the begin Jack Sprague led the race. Then on lap 1 Gus Watson hits the wall in turn 3. First caution of the day, then Jason Keller took the lead after that. Then Jack Sprague had got caught up in the wreck that took the #87 car out of the race. Jack had a whole in his radiator so they took him behind the wall. About 30 laps later he returns to the race. Meanwhile Jason Keller opens up a big lead over Greg Biffle and Randy LaJoie. Although it did seem like Keller had the best car Biffle was coming.

Then on lap 176, Greg Biffle is running in 2nd when Jeff Pervis blew his engine. Then after hitting the outside wall in corner #2 Biffle slid in Pervis' oil and spins into his driver cockpit area. Then NASCAR throws the yellow flag out. Pervis isn't getting out of the car. So NASCAR throws the red flag to get Pervis out of the car and get him to safety. They use the Jaws of Life to get him out of the car. Pervis was then airlifted to the Leigh Valley Medical Center. He is listed in serious condition as of 5/20/02.
