Busch Series Silly Season Explanation

Many people are wondering what is the "Silly Season" is. Well, just like in football where there is the free agency, there is Silly Season in NASCAR. Not only does the Silly Season go on during the end of a season it goes on during the entire season. NASCAR is one of the few sports that you can go back in the junior series and jump back into the premier series again. This can happen all because of the Silly Season. The Silly Season started when the NASCAR Busch Series started. Everyone wants another driver that can do better than the driver that they are replacing. Most recently in the Busch Series Andy Houston was fired and Todd Bodine, who was driving the #66 Winston Cup car, replaced him. Todd has been back and forth between the Winston Cup Series and the Busch Series. Todd, like many other drivers, are examples of the Silly Season being both kind and being mean to him. Not only do drivers get affected by the Silly Season but also the crew chief's jobs change. Sometimes the drivers and the crew chief don't have that chemistry that some of the big time drivers and teams have. If the drivers and the crew chief are not getting along, no matter what part of the season it is, they will change crew chiefs. It's so complicating that even I, a diehard NASCAR Fan, get confused. Don't feel bad when someone gets upset that their favorite driver is not the driver of the car that they drove last year. So I hope by you are now very understanding about the Silly Season. Some may wonder why is it called the 'Silly Season'. Well to make it plain and clear to all of you it's because owners do silly things (switching drivers) and it's during the off-season. That maybe the worse explanation I have ever given but that is really true. Team owners sometimes think that picking a driver that is the best for them usually turns out to be a driver they wish the had in the first place. That is what the Silly Season means. In conclusion, check back to Suite101.com and click on Sports & Recreation and then click on Busch Series so you don't get left behind in the Silly Season. I may be old to the sport but I'll keep you up to date and so you don't get left behind of the Silly Season moves. Always remember to check out Tom Sampson's Winston Cup Articles here in Suite101.com. Thank you, and until the next time "feel the need for some speed."
