Hornaday Wins Milwaukee

The wily veteran Ron Hornaday won the race on The Milwauee Mile dedicated to fallen veteran Cup Champion Alan Kulwicki, who perished years ago in a helicopter accident. Hornaday, driving the #2 ACDelco Chevy with just seven laps to go, passed up young guns David Stremme in the #32 Trim Spa Dodge and Shane Hmiel who was subbing for Cup driver Kasey Kahne in the #38 Great Clips Dodge with seven laps to go.

Hornaday has been knocking on the door all season for his first 2004 victory, and the fourth of his career. I watched him a lot during the Nazareth race, and you can rest assured that he comes to race the whole race, not just the last few laps. Winning the Alan Kulwicki 250 was especially sweet as he was caught making a pit stop when a caution period came out relegating him a lap down early in the event.

Hornaday was followed across the finish line by David Stremme, Jason Keller, Shane Hmiel, Bobby Hamilton Jr., Mike Bliss, Greg Biffle, David Green, Martin Truex Jr., and rookie Clint Bowyer. The top ten starters and how they finished:

  1. David Stremme -- #32 Dodge -- finished 2nd
  2. Johnny Sauter -- #27 Chevy - finished 31st
  3. Casey Atwood -- #14 Chevy - finished 32nd
  4. Kyle Busch*-- #5 Chevy -- finished 16th
  5. Jason Keller -- #22 Ford - finished 3rd
  6. Shane Hmiel -- #38 Dodge - finished 4th
  7. Ashton Lewis -- #46 Chevy - finished 13th
  8. David Green -- #37 Pontiac - finished 8th
  9. Jason Leffler -- #00 Chevy - finished 15th
  10. Ron Hornaday -- #2 Chevy - finished 1st

The see-saw battle in driver's point's didn't materialize this time as Martin Truex Jr. lengthened his lead a little on second place driver Kyle Busch. Truex now has 2572 points, with a slim 28 point lead over Busch. David Green and Greg Biffle remain in third and fourth listed with a -280 and a -327. Bobby Hamilton Jr. advanced one spot to fifth now listed with a -345. Jason Keller is just two points behind Hamilton and Ron Hornaday is just two points behind Keller. As a result, Hornaday just needs another race victory to get into the top five.

Next week the Busch Series joins the Cup Series at the Daytona International Speedway. The Winn Dixie 250 is scheduled to be televised live by the FX channel on Friday, July 2nd, at 7:30 pm eastern. This will be the last event this season that will be covered by wither the FX or FOX channels.
