As you all know the NASCAR Busch Series had the weekend off and all other NASCAR events were postponed like all other sporting events across the country. But the drivers and teams aren't taking the week off, they are all busy organizing their communities to help in the recovery effort.
Many of the drivers and teams are also pledging $10 for every lap they complete at Dover next week. If all the teams in all three events rise to the challenge NASCAR could raise over $500,000 for the Disaster Relief Fund.
Speaking of the races at Dover next week, many are wondering: Is it safe? Racing events have some of the largest crowds in American sports with several events having well over 100,000 fans in the grand stands. Several friends of mine have raised concerns that having so many people in one place would be a target too good to pass up. While no one can guarantee anything anymore, I personally think all will be fine. I'm sure security will be at it's highest ever, and with Dover Air Force Base near by, any air threat is non-existent.
Quotes…
Johnny Benson-
"I'm glad that we decided to postpone Sunday's race," said Benson, driver of the No. 10 Pontiac. "At times like this we need to think about our country and the families involved in what happened in New York and Washington. As much as I love this sport, I really didn't feel like racing this weekend."
John Andretti-
"Under the circumstances, this is the right thing to
do," said Andretti, driver of the No. 43 Dodge.
"There were a lot of choices that could have been
made but, in my opinion, this was the way to go.
"Outside of my family, nothing on earth has meant as much to me as driving a race car since I was a little kid. That's all I've ever done and all I've ever wanted to do. When somebody like me is wondering whether I really want to race on a weekend or not, then a lot of people must be having some pretty serious doubts."
Tony Stewart -
"Normally, I'll race anywhere, anyplace at anytime. But nothing's been normal since Tuesday morning. NASCAR made the right decision to postpone this Sunday's race at New Hampshire because there are a lot more important things going on in the world right now.
