The Subway, Spencer, and Speculation
Well, I admit it. I was kind of annoyed with Mike McLaughlin for leaving George DeBidart in the dust and heading over to the Joe Gibbs stables at the beginning of this season. But after his performance this past Saturday in the Subway 300, who can be angry? He pulled off a great win in an UNSPONSORED car, and I’m glad to see him successful. Of course, Spencer did his typical whining after the race. I usually like Jimmy’s honesty, but he’s starting to sound like a broken record. He screeched, “I wouldn't congratulate (McLaughlin) for the win because he didn't deserve it. You can't race in the grass and he put me down there twice, and I went to the outside and he about put me in the wall.” Spencer then threatened paybacks to both McLaughlin and Todd Bodine, who he says didn’t help him the draft as promised. "I don't know where, but somewhere down the road something will happen to his car with Jimmy Spencer behind it. If they want to race like that, I can race like that, too, don't forget." Spencer got in one more nasty dig towards McLaughlin, saying, “That’s why he doesn’t drive a Winston Cup car.” Jeff Green, had a different story. He says that Spencer unfairly passed cars that were under caution, broke a deal to help him out in the draft, and then drove all over and off the track while trying to pass McLaughlin. Green stated, "The yellow and white lines are painted on these tracks for a reason. It'll come back around. Jimmy thinks everybody's scared of him, but I'm not. I don't want to tear my car up in the process, but he doesn't care." Jimmy “Bully” Spencer might want to take note! Rookie Greg Biffle agreed, saying “If those guys (Winston Cup drivers) come down here to represent Cup, then I'd be embarrassed if I was them." McLaughlin’s first comment was to thank Bodine for helping him in the draft during the final four laps. "If Todd had gone with Jimmy, I would have been done." When Spencer’s complaints were relayed to him, he replied, “Jimmy said 'dirty racing?’ That's like the pot calling the kettle black, I think. I had to try and block any run, you see that all day long here. Once I had everybody in tow, then I just went to the bottom and that forced him to the bottom. It made for tight racing there, but he was never clear of me.”
