The Bi-Weekly Busch Review for Jan 17, 2000
Wayne and Kevin Grubb underwent laser correction surgery at the Virgina Eye Institute on January 10th. It was broadcast live on XL102 (www.wrxl.com), but I missed it. By the time I got to the link at 1:00, the chair was empty. Apparently the recovery time is so short for LASIK surgery, they'll be ready to race the very next day. I'll bet this will really help Wayne's chances in the #83 Link Belt Chevy, and Kevin's in the #37 Timberwolf Chevy. This brings up an interesting question. What do drivers do if a contact pops out during the race? I wear contacts, so I know the resulting vision problem is : little to no depth perception. Needless to say, this would be a serious impairment. It makes you wonder how many drivers have already had eye surgery... A Champion's Son No, I'm not talking about Dale Earnhardt, Jr. That boy gets enough free press. The subject in question for today is Jason Jarrett. His latest interview with NASCAR Online can be read here: http://www.nascar.com/news/2000news/Janu... Jason struggled in 1999 while driving the #33 Bayer Chevy, owned by Bace Motorsports. He only qualified for eight races, and his best finish was 22nd. His father and grandfather achieved champion status by their determination and consistency, and that's what Jason needs to aim for in 2000. He elaborated, "I think what we have to concentrate on is making the races and qualifying, because we don't have any points to fall back on. Second of all, once we do qualify for the races, we need to finish on the lead lap. I've gotten in situations where if I had run better at the first of the race, I would've finished on the lead lap." Jason will be driving the #11 Rayovac Pontiac (catchy, isn't it?) for Jarrett/Favre Motorsports in the coming season. Speaking of Pontiacs, that brings me to my next update. Will Superior Whining Skills Get Results? Representatives from the Chevy and Ford camps have shifted their squawking into high gear this week. While testing at Talladega with the new 2000 Monte Carlo and the redesigned Taurus, they managed to lob a few bombs into the enemy camp. Larry McReynolds led the pack with, "I still think they need to start all the makes off equal when we go to Rockingham (for the second race of the season) and adjust from there. I can't imagine how they can justify Pontiac going to Rockingham with five-eighths of an inch taller spoiler than us and Ford based on the way the Pontiacs performed last year."
