One Engine Rules!
Kenny Wallace, on the other hand, is actually ecstatic about the situation. He is really happy for Steve Park, and is glad to see him return. Wallace claims that his stint in the No. 1 Pennzoil Chevrolet Monte Carlo is the best thing that ever happened to his Winston Cup career. At the time when DEI hired him last September, he was really in a slump after his tumultuous relationship failed with Eel River Racing. The experience driving top shelf equipment for DEI has given him to opportunity to showcase his talents to prospective team owners that may be looking for a serious driver for his team. It has also boosted his self confidence in his racing abilities to a level that he has not enjoyed in years.
Haas/Carter Motorsports Feels the Heat....... Todd Bodine's No. 66 Ford was scratched from the Atlanta line-up by Haas/Carter Motorsports early in the week. Regardless of the fact the No. 66 sat on the pole at Las Vegas and managed to attract a one-race sponsor, the No. 26 got the call for Atlanta. The No. 26 Ford which is driven by Joe Nemechek is 26th in owner's points compared to the 33rd position of the No. 66 Ford in owner's points. Owner's points are used to determine provisional starts in case an entry does not make the field on its qualifying time. The lower number in owner's points was the deciding factor in choosing the No. 26 over the No. 66 to be entered in the MBNA America 500 at Atlanta. As it turned out, Nemechek made the field in the 27th position on his time of 29.299 with a speed of 189.214 miles per hour. Both team leaders on the No. 66 team resigned during the week. Crew chief Larry Carter, nephew of the team's co-owner Travis Carter, and Car Chief Jeff Buice have resigned. Carter is reported to have approached his uncle in January regarding his plans to seek other opportunities, and the bailing out of Kmart has speeded up his decision to leave. Larry Carter has served as Todd Bodine's spotter, and Jeff Buice has called the shots in the pits. Buice is reported to have resigned Monday, due to problems resulting in Bodine's poor 29th place finish at Las Vegas after starting from the pole. Haas/Carter Motorsports is finding out the hard way that when it rains it pours.
