Mark Martin found a track that he loves to dominate. Sunday's race at the California Speedway saw the #6 Valvoline Ford Taurus take the lead in the second half of the race and stay there. Towards the end it was starting to look just like the inaugural race last year with one exception: gas mileage wasn't an issue. If you remember last year's race, Martin was dominating late when he ran out of fuel on the last few laps and had to give up the lead to Jeff Gordon who won the race. Not this time! Six caution flags and Jack Roush's fuel mileage program allowed Martin forget about gas and concentrate on winning.
"Our car was hooked in and the longer it ran, the better it was."- Martin On lap 227 of the 250 lap race, a caution flag came out for a multicar crash caused again this week by the #22 of Ward Burton involving several cars including Jimmy Spencer, John Andretti, Sterling Marlin and others. After clean up the field was started for what was thought to be a 15-lap shoot out. Shoot out? Sure, Mark Martin Shot out the end of a cannon and left the field in his dust. There was a little concern for the Martin crew when Rusty Wallace and teammate Jeremy Mayfield restarted second and third but lap 238 Rusty lost his engine leaving the newest sensation, Jeremy Mayfield, second and without a partner to catch Martin. Mayfield got within .84 seconds of martin and that was it by the time the #6 Valvoline Ford took the Checkered flag Mayfield was 1.29 seconds behind at over 15 car lengths. Mark Martin won his third race of the season and his 25th career Winston Cup win. He had an average race speed of 140.220 mph and won over $141,375. He also claimed 5 bonus points for leading the most laps. Elliott Has Another Bad CrashBill Elliott's bad luck continued this week with a violent crash on lap 86. Going into the 1st turn Dale Jarrett's #88 Ford Taurus started to blow smoke and by the time he came through turn 2 he had blown his engine and dumped oil and fluid onto the track. Kyle Petty in the #44 got into the oil and lost control taking him right up the track and slamming into the #94 McDonalds car of Elliott sending the #94 straight into the wall tipping it up on two wheels. As Elliott's car hit the wall Petty's car sandwiched it from behind. When the #94 finally came to a stop it was on fire front and back with Bill still in the car! Rescue workers managed to get him out of the car while other workers put out the stubborn fire. With the debris and large pool of fire fighting foam solution on the track, NASCAR threw the red flag, stopping the race for 33 minutes so the crew could clean up the track. Go To Page: 1 2
