A fitting tribute..........

Todd Bodine's rising star, Cracker Barrel 400 qualifying, and a fitting tribute to a racing legend.

Todd Bodine....... Carving out his niche

Travis Cater is all smiles these days, he has finally got a real driver for the Haas-Carter Motorsports No 66 K-Mart Ford. He has got someone who can qualify the racecar, and who doesn't dawdle at the back of the pack, hiding from competition during a race.

That might be a little stern when referring to DW's failed rout in the No. 66 car, but hey, facts are facts. Yes, ol' Jaws put on quite a show while subbing for Steve Park in the No. 1 Pennzoil Chevrolet. But, maybe he was a afraid of facing the owner of DEI if he didn't produce. Who would not have been?

Todd Bodine roared to third place in qualifying for the Cracker Barrel race at Atlanta. Although he missed the Daytona 500, and scored a dismal 34th place finish at the Rock, 6 laps down, Todd managed to make up for it at Las Vegas. His top five finish there was a fitting prelude to his favorite track, Atlanta. Of course, one must not forget his back to back wins this season in the Busch series, coupled with his fifth place finish in the Aaron's 312.

Cracker Barrel Qualifying......... Gordon steals the show

Even though Dale Jarrett drove his No.88 Robert Yates Ford to the pole position for the second week in a row, it was Jeff Gordon who created the excitement during the qualifying session, winning the outside pole starting position. I, along with thousands of others, could not believe the way he drove the Hedrrick Motorsports No. 24 Dupont Chevrolet into the third turn with such reckless abandon, trying desperately to knock Jarrett off of the pole. As per usual, Gordon did not run a second qualifying lap. I assume that maybe he could have been in a big hurry to visit the rest room facilities after his first lap.

I have already covered the third place qualifier, and that leaves Mark Martin, who drove his No. 6 Roush Racing Viagra Ford to a fourth place starting position. Fifth place was a big surprise. Rookie Kevin Harvick is really making a name for himself on the Cup circuit with the No. 29 Richard Childress Racing's Chevrolet. His 14th place finish at Rockingham in his first Cup outing, after starting at 36th was also a pleasant surprise. Look out for Harvick to be a successful contender for Rookie of the Year honors this season.
