Gentlemen, Start Your ????

Suffering the off-season withdrawals, and a look at some Cup racing polls.

Start Your What?............

I have managed to hang on fairly well during the off-season, up until now. I thought I had beaten the usual withdrawal symptoms. I was biding my time until the something-or-other shoot 'em up race somewhere south of here came up. It is snowing like the dickens outside, and as I peer at my calendar, I notice that January is almost over with. That must be a good sign.

The big football game is going on this weekend, that is also a good sign. It will not be long now, I hope. It is really a sad day, when a die-hard race fan forgets the last word of the redneck national anthem. Do any of you think that NASCAR should expand the schedule to 53 races per year?

Racing Polls............ The Fans Speak Out

It is really hard this time of the year to find something interesting to write about. While surfing the Internet looking for a good topic, I found some polls that caught my eye. The Winston Cup SCENEplus online had one a couple of weeks ago, and they did a follow up on it in their current issue.

The first poll asked about the "best Veteran Driver Hire for 2001." With 1,135 fans voting:
  • Bill Elliott to Evernham Motorsports;   51.0%
  • Michael Waltrip to DEI;   35.9%
  • Ricky Craven to PPI;   6.1%
  • Todd Bodine to Haas-Carter;   4.8%
  • Kenny Wallace to Eel River;   2.2%

The second poll asked about the "worst Veteran Hire for 2001." Although the poll is still underway, as of 1/29/01 in the current issue with 702 fans voting:
  • Todd Bodine to Hass-Carter;   26.4%
  • Ricky Craven to PPI;   24.8%
  • Kenny Wallace to Eel River Racing;   20.8%
  • Michael Waltrip to DEI;   21.4%
  • Bill Elliott to Evernham Motorsports;   6.7%

A poll at Catchfence.com asked, "how do you anticipate the 2001 TV coverage will be." With 1,266 votes counted:
  • Worse;   59.3%
  • Better;   16.6%
  • Undecided;   16.1%
  • Same;   0%

We have all heard by now about O. Bruton Smith's crusade to get a second date for Texas Speedway that he claims was promised by NASCAR. A pole on ESPN asked, "which track should lose one of its Cup races in favor of Texas." With 10,322 votes cast:
  • None of them;   36.0%
