NASCAR in the Future?

The old guard and the young guard. The old ways and the new ways. Some of you that have been around for a few years can relate to what can happen when Mom and Pop pass the family business on to their children. Mom and pop have been very conservative in their ways, building up their business without taking calculated risks that could lead to it's downfall. They've gone without the frills and have taken a conservative attitude toward modern technology.

The children, in lots of cases, seem to be just the opposite. They're tired of the scrimping and saving and the conservative attitudes. Bankers and loan companies thrive on this new age attitude. In some cases, unscrupulous loaners will fill the new owner's minds with dreams of success when they know they'll fail, setting themselves up to make a tidy profit marketing the failed business. Lets face it, it has turned out to be the American way, there will always be hawks and there will always be doves.

We all know this won't be the case with NASCAR, per say, but what will happen to the racing conglomerate when Mr. Bill France and brother Jim pass the baton on to their heirs is anybodies guess. Will there be a family feud? Who will end up with the International Speedway Corp. and who will take the reins of NASCAR? Will different family factions work with or against each other. Will one faction jockey for power to control it all? This all remains to be seen.

Like it or not, the baton will be passed one of these days and all of these questions will be answered. Do any of you remember what happened when Tony George took control of the IRL (Indy Racing League)? If I remember this right, George wanted a certain amount of starting positions guaranteed to members of the IRL. This caused an angry split within the open wheel racing community, which resulted in a number of teams moving over to the CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) Series. Actually, I think it enhanced open wheel racing, but there are still hard feelings surrounding the split, and there probably always will be.

Then you have O. Bruton Smith, waiting patiently on the sidelines, who has already threatened to come up with his own stock car racing league. I had to add that, just to make it interesting, but none the less, the fact remains.
