Mr. Restrictor Plate.............

Tony Roper, the Winston 400, and the championship point's battle.

New Site Design........... Sorry about the color

Thanks for stopping by again this week! If you have problems with the site it's because Suite101.com is going through a transition to a new design using the Dewey Decimal System. Please bear with me, it's all beyond my control. And, like I mentioned above, sorry about the color..........

Tony Roper............

It's always a sad affair when a driver loses his life, whether it's on or off of the track. But, what makes this sadder is the fact that this was another broken neck. The blood flow was stopped from getting into the brain, another pulled brain stem. Basically the same injury that John Nemechek, Adam Petty, and Kenny Irwin died from. There's no doubt in my mind that if the proper safety devices had been used, he'd be alive today.

Although Tony wasn't a Cup driver, I felt that he should be mentioned here. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Michelle, his sister Kim, and his parents, Dean and Shirley. All racing families know that the worst can happen, but they're never really ready for it when it comes. None of us are...........

Winston 500.......... "Mr. Restrictor Plate"

I'm sitting here thinking how ironic it is that the man who hates restrictor plate racing the most, is one of the best at it....... Ten wins at Talladega, more than any other driver......

It was win No. 76 for Dale Earnhardt, and the No Bull Five million dollar bonus made the win that much sweeter for him. It was his seventh attempt to capture the million dollar prize. Kenny Wallace and Joe Nemechek were responsible for pushing Earnhardt to the front for the win. Earnhardt acknowledged that he couldn't have won it without Kenny Wallace. During a post race interview, Wallace and Nemechek were comically commenting that Earnhardt "owed them" part of his bonus money for their help.

All of the hype before the race about NASCAR changing the plate at the 11th hour, and that the Chevrolets were taking a beating because their times in happy hour were slower, went right out of the window as soon as the green flag waved. It didn't appear to me to be any different than any other restrictor plate race. I didn't notice the cars acting any different than they always have. I didn't see anyone pulling out on their own and running away with the race.
