Stewart sweeps the monster.......

Driver safety, MBNA 200 notes, Kurt Busch, and the MBNA.com 400 from the Monster Mile at Dover, Delaware.

Driver Safety............

I've talked with quite a few of my friends who are Dale Earnhardt fans, and they all allude to the fact that NASCAR lowered the boom on Dale with the restrictor plate fiasco as he was making a serious bid for the championship. Earnhardt fans are livid, and so is Dale.

The deaths at NHIS this season have created a rift among some of the top Cup drivers. Driver safety is now the big thing on the Cup circuit. It appears that a couple of weeks before the Dura Lube 300, Dale Jarrett, Jeff Gordon, Jeff Burton, and Rusty Wallace went to NASCAR and expressed anger that nothing had been done about safety at NHIS. Of course, they claim that they had nothing what so ever to do with NASCAR's decision to make changes right before the race.

The other side of the issue seems to be the minority for the time being. Dale Earnhardt, Mark Martin, Jack Roush, Richard Childress, and probably Dave Marcus, refer to these driver safety advocates as Wimps, and want them to 'shut up and drive.' You may have noticed Earnhardt purposely easing over and placing a donut on the side of Jeff Burton's car during the Dura Lube 300, showing his displeasure with the leader of the driver safety movement.

The lines drawn in the sand are rather confusing. Earnhardt's teammate, Mike Skinner, lauded the use of restrictor plates at NHIS, widening the gap between the two sometimes-combative drivers at Richard Childress Racing. Then you have the safety advocate leader, Jeff Burton, employed by Jack Roush, one of the 'shut up and drive' boys.

Regardless of driver safety or wimps, the general consensus is that over 90% of fans polled don't want to see restrictor plates in Cup racing. I'm sure the sanctioning body must be aware of this, but don't be surprised if they bring out the plates again this season as a 'quick fix' to pacify the driver safety advocates on the circuit.

NBNA 200 Notes........... Cup Drivers

With the absence of the Roush Racing faction of Cup drivers, there was still quite an affect on the race by Cup regulars. Jimmy Spencer managed to take out both of the Green brothers in a mere 42 laps. Championship bound Jeff Green, wasn't happy as he gestured to Spencer on the track after Spencer hit him from the rear, taking him out of contention for the win. Not long after the race had resumed, Spencer ran into David Green, taking Green and himself out of contention, along with four other drivers.
