Restrictor plates gallore.........

Restrictor plates at New Hampshire, the close championship points battle, and the Chevy Monte Carlo 400 from Richmond International Raceway.

NASCAR Speaks........... Restrictor Plates?

This reminds me of a fellow I used to work for. He couldn't stand seeing a worker standing around. We had a helper that couldn't think for himself, and when he finished what he was doing, he just stood there waiting for someone to give him further instructions. Sometimes the boss would get furious. One day he told him, "Don't just stand there, if you can't find something to do, jump up and down on one leg. I'm not paying you to stand around."

This is the way I perceive NASCAR's move for next week's race at New Hampshire. Using restrictor plates at New Hampshire is jumping up and down on one leg. Then there's the boss that said, "Don't just stand there, do something, even if it's wrong." So, Helton and Nelson did something, even if it was wrong.

Big deal. The restrictor plate will slow the Cup car down to the speed Adam Petty was going when he hit the wall with his Busch car. What good will that do if a throttle sticks going into a turn?

I got an E-mail from a fellow the other day in response to something I had written about RPM's in a previous article. This fellow made a lot of sense in his argument that NASCAR should scrap the current engine system, and go with computerized fuel injected engines that would be computer controlled at every level. I think he's on to something. After all, we're talking about "stock" cars here. The automakers started computerizing engines years ago and dumped carburetors for fuel injection. Maybe NASCAR should have taken their lead way back then?

A lot of us know that the 50's and 60's were great times, but we can't stay there, we have to move with the times, and so does NASCAR. They have used all of the latest aerodynamic technology they can get their hands on, but have turned their backs on modern engine development. NASCAR missed the boat. They don't have a computerized engine that they can control for a track like New Hampshire. So now they wipe the egg off of their face with the blood of Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin still on their hands........... Restrictor plates?
