Talladega, Race 9

Rookie watch, Martinsville revisited, and the DieHard 500 from Talladega Superspeedway, Talledega, Alabama.

Rookie Watch......... Dale Jr. Still On Top

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is still atop the rookie points standings after eight races. But, his throne is being challenged by Matt Kenseth, who's only four points down. Here's how they stand after Martinsville:

  1. Dale Earnhardt Jr.,   87
  2. Matt Kenseth,   83
  3. Stacy Compton,   66
  4. Dave Blaney,   63
  5. Jeff Fuller,   46
  6. Scott Pruitt,   42
  7. Ed Berrier,   26
  8. Mike Bliss,   9

How rookie points are awarded.

One point is awarded to each rookie who attempts to make the race. ten points are awarded for the highest rookie finish. nine points are awarded for the next highest, eight points for the next, etc., on down to the tenth place finisher, who would be awarded one point. We only have eight rookies this year, so the poorest finisher would receive three points if all of the rookies made the race. Actually, we only have seven rookies now, Jeff Fuller was fired, but his name has to stay on the list for the remainder of the season in case he gets another ride, or subs for another driver.

Extra points are awarded for a top ten finish. Ten bonus points are awarded for first place, subtracting one point for each position down to tenth place. For example, a rookie finishing seventh would receive seven bonus points, a rookie finishing nineth would receive two bonus points.

Additional rookie bonus points are awarded four times during the season, after races 11, 22, 33, and 34. Ten bonus points are awarded to the highest rookie in the points standings, on down to one bonus point being awarded to the tenth highest. A 50 point bonus is awarded after the season, which is decided by a vote from NASCAR Officials.

Matt Kenseth is the only rookie that didn't qualify in the top 25. That's a good break for Dale Jr., who starts sixth. But, lots of things can happen during 200 laps at Talledega.

Martinsville......... Revisited

The Goody's Body Pain 500 is still lingering in the minds of teams and NASCAR Officials as being a "crashfest" or "demolition derby." With a record amount of cautions for the race (17), and a record amount of caution laps for the track (112), some of the teams that didn't fare very well are still reeling in disbelief. Actually, dozens of teams didn't fare very well. Roush Racing lost three out of five racecars, but their other two came in on top, so Jack made out like a bandit.
