Miami.....

Some pro's and con's of the new TV deal, the inaugural Pennzoil 400 record setting race from Miami, and our new Winston Cup Champion.

NASCAR's New TV Deal..... How Will it Affect Us?

This week's hype centers around the new TV deal being touted by NASCAR's devotees as "the deal of the century." Well, please excuse me if I don't seem to be real excited by this. There's always two sides to any story, both pro and con. This deal has lots of pros, but, by the way it has been "dropped" on the public, there's a snake in the woodpile somewhere, there usually is.....

I'm writing this on a Sunday Morning, before the Winston Cup (WC) race. I watched the Busch race on NBC yesterday, and I was a little surprised by the lack of the usual multitude of commercial ads that ABC and CBS shove down our throats. I was also surprised to be able to listen to Joe Gibbs, a team owner in both the Busch and WC series, as one of the TV commentators. Don't ask me who the other two fellows were, I missed the beginning of the show, and only know that one of them was named "Mike" (found out later it was Mike Wallace, Rusty's brother) and he seemed to know a little about racing. (The other fellow was Alan Bestwick, from Speedvision) (Joe Gibbs covered the WC race too!)

I have to say though, I thought the coverage of the Busch race was fairly decent. It was obvious that NBC wasn't used to televising races, but if you can gauge by what they did at their inaugural showing, I think they'll do alright. When you are sitting home and listening to people that you aren't used to listening to, it's hard to gather all of the info that they are trying to get across to you. I hope NBC will hire on some of the commentators (former drivers) that we are all used to listening to, before they start televising races on a weekly basis. The same goes for Fox, they will be new to this racing game also. My thoughts go to the big shake-up in football broadcasting a few years ago. The announcers from the network that got left out in the cold, were working for the other networks by the time the season started. I hope that happens here, but then again, wouldn't it be nice not to have to listen to Eli Gold again? Sorry Eli, but you're just not a racer.
