NASCAR Families - Part 1

The new champion has been crowned, Raybestos Rookie of the Year, the top ten in Winston Cup, and NASCAR Families, Part 1, featuring the Bakers and the Allisons.

Jarrett Takes the Reins....... New Winston Cup Champion

Well, actually it's old news. We knew he was heading in that direction weeks ago, but it's nice it's finally happened. You know how it is in racing, nothing is certain until the checkered flag waves. It waved for Jarrett Friday night at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NYC. If you haven't already checked it out, read the story on NASCAR Online . You can check out the rest of the banquet news at this link .

Raybestos Rookie of the Year...... Tony Stewart

This was also a forgone conclusion, we all knew it was going to materialize. Regardless of whether you like the guy or not, this was the finest rookie showing in the 51 year history of Winston Cup Racing. Bar none. Yes, everyone will allude to the fact that Davey Allison won two races in his rookie year, but his record was nothing like Tony's. Tony's the best there is up to this point, and that's the way it is!

I would say that one of his biggest accomplishments is placing fourth in the Winston Cup points standings. I guess three wins and 12 top fives would make anyone look good in the standings, not to mention the 21 top ten finishes. It's really hard to make a prediction about a race driver, but everyone seems to think he'll make a solid run for the championship next season. I thought he made a solid run for it this season! Who knows what will happen? Look at Kenny Irwin, the rookie season he had was certainly better than his following season, which was so bad he lost his ride. I'm sure we'll all be watching Tony in 2000, and I'm also sure that he's garnered quite a lot of loyal fans that will be cheering him on. Maybe I'll be one of them. The Top Ten 1999 Season

Number one is Winston Cup Champion and driver of the No. 88 Quality Care Team, Dale Jarrett. Dale earned 5,262 points, 4 wins, 24 top fives, 29 top tens, and winnings of $3,608,829.00. Add that to his $2,965,767.00 for the championship, and his total is $6,574,596.00 for the season. Not bad Dale!
