Derrick Cope.........   Unemployed.........

Eel River Racing had planned to fill out the remainder of the season with Cope behind the wheel of their No. 30 Sara Lee companies sponsored Pontiac, but with Cope getting sent home for failure to qualify, things changed quickly. It's been reported that Cope only made the field for one race (Brickyard) so far in the second half of the season. Sponsors abhor this, their car doesn't get the exposure that they're paying for. So, now the revolving wheel gets a little bigger, another vacant Winston Cup seat, and another driver looking for work. I wonder which one of these unemployed Cup drivers will end up back in the Busch series next season. Todd Bodine got the nod from Eel River and raced the No. 30 at Bristol (finishing 15th), his first Cup race since last season's finale in Atlanta.

Goody's Headache Powder 500....   Earnhardt Strikes Again

This was a race that will be talked about for years. It was muddled with controversy, wrecks, rough driving, and all of the ofher variables that make up short track racing. Dale spun out Terry Labonte, the leader, and went on to win after Terry wrecked. The crowd wasn't pleased, and you can rest assured that Terry wasn't too pleased either. But, as they say, "That's Racin."

The other controversy, and one not to be taken lightly, was the one involving Jerry Nadeau and Dale Jarrett. Jerry bumped DJ's rear bumper and wrecked him. Dale was riding around the track in a crippled car after his crew made repairs from a previous altercation, trying to get some points to maintain his points lead. NASCAR claims that the drivers were warned about the slower car, and penalized Nadeau two laps for running into DJ. DJ claimed it was his fault, he shouldn't have been up in the groove, but down on the apron out of the way.

So, the main controversy? Why was Nadeau penalized and Earnhardt wasn't? NASCAR claims that there isn't any conclusive evidence that Earnhardt did anything wrong. Earnhardt said that he just meant to rattle Terry's cage, he didn't mean to spin him out.
