Ricky Rudd Reeling.....
Ricky was in the process of starting up another team, with thoughts of taking on a partner to help with his expansion plans for his owner/driver operation. Then all of a sudden, Tide announced that it was leaving Rudd Performance Motorsports at the end of this season. This left Ricky reeling in disbelief. What happened? The sponsors are looking to get their monies worth from their NASCAR affiliations. The cost of sponsoring a Winston Cup car has risen dramatically in the last three years, and the big money is going with the big successful teams for the best advertising possible for their product. I guess Ricky should have expanded his team a couple of years ago. Keep an eye on Ricky, he says he's not a quitter.
Skinner wins pole......
Mike Skinner got some great news at Pocono. His crew chief, Larry McReynolds, signed a contract with Childress Racing for another three years. Larry has been trying to start his own Winston Cup team, but just couldn't get it all together before his self imposed deadline. He and his silent partner made themselves a promise that if they couldn't do it right, they weren't going to do it at all. It a period in time that has rendered sponsorship unpredictable, it's better to build on what you have, instead of reaching for something else and ending up with nothing.
That's just what Mike Skinner did Friday, he built on what he has, a great team with a great crew chief. Skinner is really elated by the news that McReynolds is going to be staying with him, and he took the good news to heart by 'letting it all hang out' on the track for this qualifying run of 170.451 mph on the 2.5 mile triangular Pocono track. Automobile Racing Club of America........
Or, "ARCA" as it's commonly known, has been responsible for enhancing the careers of some great Winston Cup drivers over the years. When I watched the ARCA race at Pocono Saturday, it dawned on me that this organization has really come a long way since it's inception in 1950. I attended the ARCA race there a couple of years ago, and was happy to see that Frank Kimmel, Blaise Alexander, Tim Steele, and the other regulars were still at it.
