Winston Cup News, July '99

There's lots of news to write about this week. As the second half of the season gets under way, there are a lot of changes looming in the future of WC racing.

Jarrett Gets Angry............

They all say "That's racing" when something controversial happens on the track. That's what Jeff Gordon was saying when Dale Jarrett was shaking his finger at him and using some language that had to be bleeped for the RPM Tonight broadcast. Jarrett was caught up in the heat of the moment, and was citing the three times that Gordon got into him, and "just wait till Pocono" was on his agenda. He is reported to have cooled down, and says that everything is fine between him and Gordon. You know as well as I do, that's not the case. They can say what they want, but the fact remains that Jarrett won't forget the incident any time soon, and he will no doubt be watching for Gordon at Pocono, prepared to hold his line and race his race.

Fans Angry With Jarrett.........

Letters to the Editor of the Winston Cup Scene reflected on a double standard on NASCAR's part, for allowing Dale Jarrett to pass the pace car at the Pepsi 400. I also seem to remember drivers getting fined by NASCAR for using foul language during an interview. NASCAR contends that Jarrett did indeed get ahead of the pace car, but he was down on the apron, and wasn't trying to do anything to enhance his position, the main reason for the "passing the pace car" rule in the first place. So, everything seems hunky dorry for the points leader at this time. Jarrett was really down on NASCAR for their big boner at Watkins Glen a year or two ago that cost him the points that would have won him the championship. Maybe NASCAR is kind of treating Jarrett with kid gloves because the memory of their foul-up is fresh in their minds?

New Driver For Hendrick's Team............

There was a lot of rough driving in the Jiffy Lube 300. You would think that some of the drivers were fighting to keep their jobs. That was the case with Wally Dallenbach, who was one of the most aggressive drivers in the race. It seems that he was indeed in jeopardy of losing his job, although we didn't know it at the time, but he must have had an inkling. Jerry Nadeau has been contracted to drive the No. 25 Budweiser car for the 2000 season. Nadeau hasn't set the world on fire with his race car, and neither has Dallenbach. So, I'm wondering why the change? Young blood? There was something written about the team going for a younger driver. If that's the case, Terry Labonte had better watch his p's and q's. He's over forty, and hasn't exactly been setting the track on fire either, although he does have one win this season.
