Winston Cup News

Next Weekend

Winston Cup had the weekend off, next weekend they'll be roaring around the track at Las Vegas. Qualifying for the Las Vegas 400 will be televised on ESPN2 at 5 PM EST, Friday, March 5th. The race will be televised live by ABC at 2:30 PM EST Sunday, March 7th. Don't plan on seeing very much of the race in between ABC's commercial ads.

Names For Sale!

Would you sell your name? Well, I doubt that anyone would, not that they'd get anything for it to begin with. But, other names of things have been changed in the past (airports, streets, towns, schools, etc), and now one has been sold. Charlotte Motor Speedway will become Lowe's Motor Speedway. Bruton Smith sold Charlotte Motor Speedway's name to Lowe's for 35 million dollars.

You can imagine the hurt feelings caused by this blatant money grubbing sale. Long time fans and speedway employees in the area are reeling in disbelief. Not to mention the millions of dollars spent for advertising and souvenirs to celebrate the track's 40th anniversary. That's all for naught now. The souvenirs will be worthless, or will they? I would imagine that fans will still buy them, as a remembrance, and also as a statement against the sale. As far as I'm concerned, it will always be Charlotte Motor Speedway. I could care less about Bruton Smith, and his millions.

There's also the problem that the North Carolina DOT faces, in changing road signs for the new name. This cost will be passed on to the taxpayers, not to Bruton Smith. The taxpayers will have to pay for the change while Smith laughs all the way to the bank.

Now that Lowe's has sunk 35 million into a name, they will pull their sponsorship for the Richard Childress No. 31 car after this season. They have been a Winston Cup car sponsor since 1995. Does anyone care to rush right out to Lowe's and buy something?

Dale Jarrett: Gentleman Racer

Some of you might have noticed at the end of the Daytona Race, Dale Jarrett became agitated at reporters that kept asking about who caused the wreck. Everyone was quick to label Kenny Irwin as the culprit. As a matter of fact, Kenny even said he might have touched Jarrett's car, to try to quell all of the stink that was made about it. I watched the in-car camera shots of the wreck from both Irwin's and Jarrett's cars, and there was no sign of even the slightest bump. Other video coverage of the wreck didn't show any contact either.
