Starting positions for the MBNA Gold 400 to be televised live Sunday, Sept. 20th, 12:00 PM on TNN.
Winston Cup (WC) Jeff Gordon was the first loser of the Excide NASCAR Select Batteries 400 Saturday night, as Jeff Burton edged a hood length ahead of him to take the checkered flag in an exciting duel to the finish. Although Gordon placed second, he still beat Mark Martin, and gained five points on Mark in the points race for the championship. Roush Racing didn't have anything to whine about this weekend, and didn't seem interested in lodging any complaints against the Rainbow Warrior team. NASCAR cleared Jeff and his team of any wrongdoing in the "Tiregate" affair that erupted from Roush Racing's complaints after Gordon's win on two fresh tires at New Hampshire, when most everyone else took on four. As a matter of fact, Jeff Burton thanked Jeff Gordon "for racing him clean." Ted Musgrave was driving the No. 96 Caterpillar car this week and brought it in for a 25th place finish. Ted is getting a lot of experience driving for different teams in his quest for a permanent ride. This will only prove to enhance his abilities when he gets settled in with a team of his own. Todd Bodine was back in WC, driving the No. 91 car, but suffered with burned feet a little more than half way through the race. Dick Trickle's rear brakes locked up and put him into the wall, so he was available to relieve Bodine. Short track racing involves a lot of bumping and grinding, and this race was certainly no exception. There were eight caution periods for 66 laps. Top ten finishers, with money won:
Mike Skinner continued to make a good showing with another top ten finish. Kenny Irwin enhanced his prospects of winning the "Rookie Of The Year" title with a good finish.
