North Shore Beaches

How about sitting on the beach right next to the second oldest lighthouse in the United States? Originally constructed in 1746, Brant Point Lighthouse is a wonderful place to watch the sail and ferry boats rounding the point as they make their way into the harbor. The beach, located just in front of and adjacent to the lighthouse, is an easy walk or bike ride from the center of town. There are no lifeguards, restrooms or other facilities. Experienced swimmers only at Brant Point, there is a strong current and the beach drops off suddenly under the water. Three miles west of town lies Dionis Beach, a bit quieter and more secluded. It is sheltered by dunes and the calm water is safe for swimming and children. Accessible by car, bike or shuttle bus, lifeguards are on duty daily and restrooms are available. Information regarding the beaches described in this article as well as those on Nantucket's southern and eastern shores may be found at http://www.nantucket.net/
