Dining Out, Nantucket Style

Eating out in Nantucket is as much a joy as any other activity on the island. Nantucket may be small, but the cuisine is diverse, and first class!

Here are some highlights of Nantucket restaurants:

· Cioppino's came to me highly recommended, and with good reason! Serving the finest from pasta dishes to black angus steak, Cioppino's offers delicious food and delightful atmosphere. I sat on the patio, and as the sun set around me, I enjoyed the Wild Mushroom Stuffed Ravioli, with goat cheese, sundried tomatoes, and pine nuts. All my favourites!

· The Rose and Crown Pub on South Water Street is a charming and popular spot to dine. The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is jovial. They make the best French fries on the island!

· Steamboat Wharf Pizza on Broad Street is the place to go if you're pining for a pizza pie. Grab a slice and relax on the wharf. If you're a hungry crowd, order a pizza to deliver to your hotel or rental property! Delicious pepperoni pizza, to boot.

· Provisions on the Straight Wharf is a great place to get an unusual gourmet sandwich. They offer the famous "Turkey Terrific", similar to Monica's Thanksgiving-leftovers sandwich recipe on Friends.

· The Nantucket Lobster Trap is a wonderful place to go for lobster. Lobsters can be found just about anywhere on the island, when in season, but the Lobster Trap has great ambiance and often offers a range of lobster sizes. When I visited Nantucket as a child, my sister desperately wanted a lobster, and it was a busy weekend and all the restaurants were sold out. Finally we discovered the Lobster Trap, who not only had lobsters, but had an enormous five-pound lobster, of which my eight-year-old sister managed to eat one claw, before conceding defeat. (The rest didn't go to waste, for sure!)

· Cap'n Tobey's Chowder House on Straight Wharf had both my sister and I beat. We visited two years ago, as adults, and neither of us could put a dent in the entrĂ©e! The portions are huge, but delicious. Of course, the New England Clam Chowder is divine, and the fish n' chips is equally good.

· Nantucket Nectars "Juice Guys Juice Bar" - the home of the line of juice drinks - is a full-service juice bar allowing you to choose your own blend or try any of their specials. It is well worth the trip, even though the queues are often long, to taste the finest fresh fruit blends in the region. They sell Nantucket Nectars souvenirs and some baked goods, too.
