When Draupadi learnt that Arjun was returning to Indraprastha with his latest wife, she was furious. She swore to gouge Subhadra's eyes out. Arjun did not have the courage to meet Draupadi and sent Subhadra to make peace. Subhadra was Krishna's sister and had learnt the art of manipulating people from him. She went to Draupadi's chamber dressed in the simple clothes of a commoner. She knelt at Draupadi's feet and said, "Your husband saved me from a fate worse than death by marrying me, and for that I am indebted to him. I come here not as his wife but as your slave. My brother has instructed that my place should be at Draupadi's feet and not at Arjun's side." Draupadi's heart melted. She had faith in Krishna and also realised how Arjun felt when she was living with one of her other husbands. She replied, "For four years I cannot be with Arjun and those four years are yours, but during the one year I live with Arjun you will not remain at Indraprastha."

It was thus that Subhadra was inducted into this crazy network of polyandry and polygamy.
