Utanka - I

Utanka was the disciple of a Brahmin named Veda. Once, when Veda had to leave to conduct a sacrifice, he left Utanka in charge of his household. Utanka began to conduct the affairs of his teacher's house with devotion and capability. One day the maidservants of his mistress approached him and said, "Your mistress is in that time of her cycle when intercourse is likely to be fruitful. Your master is away and has left you in charge. Hence you must consider it your duty to impregnate your mistress on his behalf." Utanka refused by saying that only his master could order him to perform such an act. In the absence of his direct instruction such an act would be improper.

When returned he learnt of the events that had transpired in his absence. He was pleased with the stand taken by his disciple. He said to Utanka, "Your education is now complete. You have exhibited mastery of both theoretical knowledge and its application. You are now free to pursue your own ambitions."

Utanka then expressed his desire to present his teacher with the customary honorarium. "If I depart without repaying the debt that I have incurred in receiving my education from you, then I will not be able to use what I have learnt. So master, please tell me what should I bring for you."

There was nothing that Veda wanted. He asked Utanka to go to his mistress and bring her whatever she desired. Utanka approached his mistress and explained his situation to her. He then asked her to name what she desired so that he could present it to her and repay his debt to his master. She replied, "The Queen of King Paushya wears a pair of earrings. Some revered Brahmins are dining at my house four days from now. I wish to wear those earrings on that occasion. If you succeed in bringing those earrings to me you will have my blessings, else ..."

Utanka set off for the palace of King Paushya. On the way he saw a huge man riding a huge bull. The man ordered Utanka to eat the dung of the bull and drink its urine. At first Utanka refused. But soon he realised that this man could not be an ordinary mortal and that he was being tested in some manner. Hence Utanka complied with the unusual instructions and after hurriedly washing his hands and mouth went on his way.
