When the battle was over, only two of Arthur's brave knights still stood on a field soaked in blood with the heavy stench of death in the air. Arthur had his victory. The two knights, Bedivere and Kay, carried the mortally wounded Arthur off of the battlefield. Arthur ordered to throw Excalibur back into the lake. As Sir Bedivere obeyed and did so, the Lady of the Lake's hand raised up to reclaim it. Guarded by four beautiful fairy queens, Arthur then boarded a magical boat that carried him off and vanished into the mist. Arthur had gone to mystical Avalon to be cured of his wounds so that he could one day return as King of England. On Arthur's tomb at Glastonbury it reads:
