Interview with Carolyn Hart

I am pleased to be able to interview one of my absolute favorite authors, Carolyn Hart.

SUITE: Please tell me a little about your two series, and why you chose to write these particular characters.

CAROLYN: The Death on Demand series is a celebration of youth and enthusiasm. My protagonist is Annie Laurance, who is young, eager, happy and (I hope) fun to be with. Her husband Max ably aids and abets in detection, Max is laidback, easygoing, determined always to have fun and he adores Annie. They are a nice contrast. She is serious; he is determinedly non-serious. Annie focuses on work; Max on play. Annie worked hard for her education; Max was born to wealth. Annie owns a mystery bookstore, Death on Demand. This background makes it possible for me to describe great mysteries of the past and present. I wanted in this series to make the point that mysteries matter. They are a reaffirmation of our commitment to goodness. I hope that the books offer good mysteries as well as lighthearted entertainment. The Henrie O mysteries are a celebration of age and experience. Henrietta O'Dwyer (Henrie O) Collins is a retired newspaperwomen who has a talent for trouble and a taste for adventure. These books offer an older heroine who expects to be treated with respect.

SUITE: When did you first start writing? First start publishing?(short stories, books, etc)

CAROLYN: My first book was a juvenile mystery, THE SECRET OF THE CELLARS. It was published in 1964.

SUITE: Why do you write? Why mysteries?

CAROLYN: Writers must write. It is not a matter of choice. I write mysteries because we live in an unjust world, but in the mystery I can always create justice.

SUITE: Did you have another occupation before you became a published author?

CAROLYN: I was a newspaper reporter for a brief time when first out of college.

SUITE: Do you have something you wish to accomplish with the things you write?

CAROLYN: I hope to offer readers a just world.

SUITE: What do you want people to take away with them when they read your writing?

CAROLYN : I hope they will feel better after they read one of the books.

SUITE: Do you ever have a message?

CAROLYN: All authors have a message. I will leave it to readers to decide what it is.

SUITE: What time of day do you find you are most creative?

CAROLYN: I am a morning person. I start to work about 8 a.m. and work until mid afternoon.

SUITE: I’ve found so many writers to be morning people that I might have to rethink being a night person J
