This week we have with us mystery author Sandra Levy Ceren.
SUITE: Tell me a little about your books and what genre they are SANDRA: I write mysteries, often incorporating Dr. Cory Cohen, psychologist/amateur sleuth. One was a "why-dunit" and the others "who-dunits." Cory is a bi-racial, single, middle-age woman. SUITE:When did you first start writing? SANDRA: I first started writing when I learned to use crayons. I wrote a few paragraphs involving children who had to solve a personal problem. Later, when I became an avid reader and could use a pencil and eraser, I wrote short-short stories. Used up lots of erasers. First published novel PRESCRIPTION FOR TERROR 1999 The same protagonist appears in a short story "Silver is Better than Gold," in CRIMINAL KABBALAH, an anthology of Jewish Detective and Mystery Fictions. My second novel, SECRETS FROM THE COUCH, is scheduled for publication September, 2002. SUITE: Why do you write? SANDRA: Creative satisfaction. . SUITE: Do you have a day job? SANDRA: I'm a clinical psychologist by profession. SUITE: Do you have something you wish to accomplish with the things you write? i.e. enjoyment, challenging, fear...what do you want people to take away with them when they read your writing? Do you ever have a message? SANDRA: My first published novel, PRESCRIPTION FOR TERROR was written to call attention to the danger of managed care with particular reference to mental health and the necessity to reveal confidential information to unknown entities. In all my writings, I incorporate my knowledge of psychology to develop and explain characters. People are interested in human nature. I hope what I write englightens and interests. SUITE: What time of day do you find you are most creative? SANDRA: Early morning and late evening. SUITE: What sort of things do you do for fun? SANDRA: I walk at least two miles almost every day, or exercise to a video. I often dance alone while listening to a good beat of Latin and Jazz. From time to time, I dabble with a paint brush on canvas or paper. I love films, classical and jazz music, theatre and dance. SUITE: Do you have a favorite author/authors? SANDRA: I have many faves. Margaret Atwood, Barbara Kingsolver, Maeve Binchey, T. Jefferson Parker, Michael Palmer etc. etc. etc. SUITE: A book or author that influenced you a lot? SANDRA: Robert Lindner's The Jet Propelled Couch. SUITE: Favorite mystery movie? SANDRA: THE MALTESE FALCON SUITE: Favorite Mystery TV show? SANDRA: INSPECTOR MORSE or many British mysteries. SUITE: Those are good. How do you feel about writing? And how does it feel when you are writing? Excited, frustrated, is it just business? SANDRA: I lose myself when I'm writing.
