This week we have with us another relatively new mystery author, Charles Coker. SUITE; Tell me a little about your books and what genre they are. CHARLES: I have only published one novel, so far. It is a murder mystery entitled ‘A Walk In Harm’s Way’. The second novel, ‘One Bloody Mistake’, is in the works and will also be a mystery revolving around some of the same characters. SUITE: When did you first start writing? First start publishing? (short stories, books, etc) CHARLES: I first began writing when I was in junior high school and continued through high school. It provided me a decent outlet for my emotional needs. Poetry is another form of expression which I kept a deep dark secret for most of my life. It wasn’t until my early forties that I shared any of my writing with my family. In the early 60’s I lived in Pakistan for 1 ½ years and kept a journal of my experiences, emotions and observations. It is still something that I look at from time to time along with some of the photographs I took from that time. I am hoping to write fiction based on those experiences at some time in the future. I actually got the calling to write a novel 15 or 16 years ago and, like many people who do, made excuses of work, family and lack of time as for not doing so. It began to take shape ten years ago when my time was a little more flexible but I quit again when time got too short. About three years ago, I finally took the time out from making a living to get serious about writing my first novel. It is being published via POD, specifically Xlibris Publishing. After I sold my business three or four years ago, I purposely decided not to pursue anything else until I had that desire to write a novel satisfied. It is the first thing I have actually published for public consumption. Having finished the process once, I have learned that writing isn’t a itch you can scratch and it’ll go away. SUITE: Why do you write? CHARLES: The simplest answer is because I have to. I have always wanted to write, and would still like to do some work as an investigative reporter or photographic journalist. As an experienced private investigator, I have written many reports for clients and writing from research became second nature. When I started writing fiction, I realized that I needed to write as a way of communicating and sharing myself with others.
