This week we have with us a relatively new mystery author, Dennis Collins. SUITE: Tell me a little about your books and what genre they are DENNIS: My series of stories are about a rookie Private Investigator who is receiving his "street" education from a couple of Detroit Police Detectives SUITE: When did you first start writing? DENNIS: I've been doing club newsletters off and on for about twenty years. A few years back, I wrote a profile of one our colorful boat club members in a newsletter and a copy of my story landed on the desk of the President of the American PowerBoat Association. He sent it to a magazine in my name and they published it. SUITE: Why do you write? DENNIS: I guess that I write just because I enjoy telling stories. SUITE: Do you have a day job? DENNIS: I'm a retired engineer SUITE: Do you have something you wish to accomplish with the things you write? i.e. enjoyment, challenging, fear...what do you want people to take away with them when they read your writing? Do you ever have a message? DENNIS: I've never given much thought to sending a message, unless it's a subtle moral declaration about good triumphing over evil. For the most part, my work is entertainment. SUITE: What time of day do you find you are most creative? DENNIS: I've always been a morning person. I think much more clearly before eight AM. I may write at any time of the day or night but mornings are the most productive. SUITE: What sort of things do you do for fun? DENNIS: I'm an avid Harley rider; I just love the highway. I'm a pretty faithful football fan too, generally get to ten or twelve pro games a year. I'm quite involved in boat racing as well. I serve on the Operations Board of Directors for Gold Cup Regatta, the most prestigious event in powerboating. SUITE: Powerboating, that sounds interesting. Do you have a favorite author/authors? DENNIS: There are almost too many to list. For pure talent, I'd have to say Herman Wouk. SUITE: A book or author that influenced you a lot? Personally or professionally. DENNIS: I suppose it all started with Franklin W. Dixon and the Hardy Boys series and then I grew up on a steady diet of Mickey Spillaine. It was actually a short story by Ernest Hemingway that made me want to write. SUITE: Favorite mystery movie? DENNIS: The Maltese Falcon (There will never be another Bogart) SUITE: Favorite mystery TV show? If you don't have a favorite mystery one, then some other type of TV show that is a favorite.
