Interview with author Vickie Britton

I would like to welcome mystery/adventure author Vickie Britton to Suite101. She is part of a writing team with her sister Loretta Jackson.

SUITE: Tell me a little about your books and what genre they are.

VICKIE: It seems hard to believe, but my sister Loretta Jackson and I are co-authors of over thirty titles of mystery and suspense. Our newest release, The Pirated Emerald, is the seventh book in the Ardis Cole Series. These are full-length, original audio books from Books in Motion. In this episode archaeologist Ardis Cole has an undersea adventure as she searches for an infamous emerald believed to have once belonged to Jean Lafitte. Modern-day treasure hunters try to beat her to the jewel, which is hidden somewhere on a sunken ship. We write our series mysteries so they can stand alone; it is not necessary to have read previous titles.

We also received the exciting news recently that two of our earlier books, Path of the Jaguar and Nightmare in Morocco will be going into large-print editions with Thorndike Press. These books are also available as e-books from New Concepts Publishing.

SUITE: When did you first start writing?

VICKIE: I know Loretta started writing quite young because as her little sister some of my first words were “Out! Out!” That is because I used to pester her relentlessly while she tried to write, until she would chase me from her room to get a little privacy. Having an author in the house influenced me to start writing at an early age. In the ninth grade I filled up my math notebook with the beginnings of a novel about a very gothic character. His name was Adrian Voltaire Rockford, and he had a pet raven on shoulder. (At the time I was reading Gothics and watching the Rockford Files.) I should have paid more attention in math class. To this day, I have trouble balancing my checkbook.

Loretta and I have both written all of our lives, but made our first sale to a national publication in 1989.

SUITE: Why do you write?

VICKIE: Both Loretta and I had this dream of being writers from an early age. We write for the love of writing. Neither of us could imagine life without this goal.

SUITE: Do you have a day job?

VICKIE: Of course the dream of every writer is to be able to devote full-time to their craft. Unfortunately, reality interferes. Loretta works with rental property and I, part-time with my husband at his computer business. In the past Loretta taught school, and I had a series of “odd jobs”, but they were more attempts to support my writing habit than serious career
