faster, produce more. I have years' worth of ideas simmering urgently in my head, "Write me, write me, no-write me first!" I wish I'd begun in college. My only consolation for my late start is that nothing is wasted. Not one second of life is wasted on a writer.

SUITE: What type of book promotion do you feel has worked best for you?

ANGELA: The most effective thing was volunteering a LOT over the years at Mystery Writers of America, and the second most effective was attending conferences. (Serving on panels is good, but doesn't compare to hanging out in the bar, in my opinion, with lots of cards in your pocket.) These two things have done fabulous things for my visibility and have also generated excellent opportunities. Other than that, I don't know yet. My website helps. I designed and printed thousands of bookmarks advertising my website and leave them EVERYWHERE, and I know those have helped. I just finished a few months' slave-labor marketing my upcoming book, but it's too soon to see which things I did will be effective. I will say that synchronicity has been working for me. I loved them all. My mother let me have dogs and parakeets. So I love birds, too. No pets now, or houseplants. I'm finished with responsibilities. Two of my three daughters have cats, go figure. My step-son is also a writer, so he's like me. No pets or plants. Mrs. Risk has a black cat, Jezebel, whose personality I would describe as permanent PMS. I really like Jezebel.

SUITE: What part of you shows through in your writing? What does your writing say about you?

ANGELA: I haven't the faintest idea. I was forced to ask Barry, and this is what he says: I'm a strong female and so I write about strong females, and/or weaker males or females learning to get strong. He says also that I know much about people's inner workings, so I write with understanding about people. He says
