Review of Irregardless of Murder & Prescription For Terror

This week we are beginning something new-I will be giving you a bonus review from time to time. For this week's feature article you will be getting reviews of two very different books-one a charming cozy and the other an intense medical thriller. Both books are enjoyable mysteries that will meet the different interests of the mystery fan. So pick up both books and you'll have one read to suite you when you're in the mood for something light, and another when you want something that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Irregardless of Murder
Ellen Edwards Kennedy
St. Kitts Press
November 2001
275 pages
ISBN 0966187970

In Irregardless of Murder, high school English teacher Amelia Prentice literally stumbles over the dead body of one of her students, Marguerite LeBow. Miss Amelia lives in a small town where one would think nothing ever happens, but she quickly learns differently as she uncovers the puzzle behind Marguerite's death. Because the police consider her a suspect in the murder, Amelia finds it necessary to investigate the murder along with Vern, the nephew of a former boyfriend. Unfortunately, they only have one solid clue to work with, the letters UDJ, and no one seems to know what they mean.

But the killer doesn't intend for Amelia to discover their identity and sets about to stop her. At one point her best friend is tossed overboard from a ferryboat and Amelia is carjacked in a deserted parking deck.

The twists and turns in this mystery are multiple and Amelia is delightful. The added romance on the side with charming millionaire Steve Trechere, adds to the enjoyment.

Prescription for Terror is a psychological thriller with plenty of bodies and action for any fan of the genre. Sandy Ceren has taken advantage of her thirty years of clinical work with crime victims to add a great deal of realism to this story. Ceren's heroine, Dr. Cory Cohen, exposes the perils of managed health care while tracking down a dangerous sociopath who leaves a trail of bodies in his/her wake. The tension builds to the end as we see inside the mind of a serial killer and experience the terror he provokes.
