Normally I don't pick up a book this large, I just don't have the time. But in this case I was glad that I did. Shadows Fall held my attention all the way through to the end, with twists and turns all along the way. It kept me up more than one night.

As a teenager, Beth Gray went to prison for a murder she didn't commit. After prison, she managed to start a new life for herself, including a wonderful young daughter. But her past continues to haunt her in the form of horrible nightmares that make sleep difficult and force her to work herself into an illness. Not only is the murder haunting her but a traumatic incident from her childhood that she can't completely remember which caused her to be claustrophobic. While recovering from her illness she decides to return home for the first time since that horrible night when another local teenager had been murdered, and she was accused.

Not everyone in her family is happy to see her when she returns to Wilder, California and the mountain lodge she was raised in, and had hoped to one day run as her father had wished. She hopes to learn the truth and finally be able to be free of her torment. Soon she becomes the victim of cruel pranks that end up deadly. Beth doesn't know whom to trust and even wonders if someone in her own family might be her tormentor. The only person she does trust is Dr. Peter Lloyd, a stranger who had shown her kindness in prison and now made his home in those same mountains. But Peter doesn't remain a stranger for long.

Barbara Klaser is an excellent writer. In Shadows Fall, she gives the reader not only a suspenseful story, but real characters with real pains and emotions. I look forward to seeing more books from this writer.
