Barbara Reed has created an interesting and unique amateur sleuth in HIGH NOTES ARE MURDER. Her main character, Liz Hanlon, is a jazz singer and pianist just like the author. The background is genuine and interesting, showing the reader a side of the music business they don't normally see. In this book Liz gets a chance at her first really big break but things start going bad when she is not only the victim of a stalker but finds her own cousin, Gina, murdered in a club owned by her long time friend, Sonnie. Sonnie's childhood pal, a famous music promoter, is actually the force behind her big break and plans to use Sonnie's clubs to put on a series of big TV music shows featuring Liz's band among others. But as Liz attempts to solve the murder of her cousin she uncovers a closet full of secrets about her family and friends that could lead to her own death if she isn't careful. The local police don't really seem all that concerned about her safety, but thankfully her brother comes to the rescue by providing Liz with a bodyguard who saves her life more than once. I found myself lost in this world of music, and as a singer myself related to many of her day-to-day trials. The plot is intense, suspenseful, full of twists and turns, and the characters are interesting and fun. The added attraction of being able to actually listen to songs mentioned in the book sung by the author herself is a great and unusual bonus. I am anxiously awaiting the next book to see where Liz's life in the music world takes her from here, and what surprises and dangers await her.
