MYSTERIES ON TV

MYSTERIES AND TV

Mysteries and TV have been partners for years. When you don't have time to pick up a book and want to enjoy a good mystery there has always been something to watch. Some mystery shows have gotten their start as books, such as SPENSER FOR HIRE, PERRY MASON, NANCY DREW & THE HARDY BOYS, FATHER DOWLING and ELLERY QUEEN. Others have gone from TV and ended up in books such as my personal favorite, MURDER SHE WROTE.

The list of great mystery TV shows through the years is endless. ROCKFORD FILES, LAW & ORDER, CSI, COLUMBO, KOJAK, STARSKY & HUTCH, CAGNEY & LACEY, HOMICIDE, DIAGNOSIS MURDER, MAGNUM P.I., HILLSTREET BLUES, and more than I could ever possibly name or remember.

PBS has contributed greatly to mysteries on television with its show, MYSTERY, which through the years has featured such greats as Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, P.D. James, Dorothy L. Sayers, Inspector Morse, and many more.

A & E continues that tradition by making new movies of Agatha Christie's Poirot stories, and playing repeats of many of the great mystery television shows through the years.

Mysteries and TV have always had a relationship, sometimes a tenuous one, and at other times a glorious relationship such as the numerous years that MURDER SHE WROTE stayed in the top ten.
