Rosie Brown’s family visits her grandparents old estate where she meets her cousin, Alex. She is immediately spooked by the old house, and longs to return home. But Alex has a lot to show his cousin and talks her into going with him to explore the place. One of their first discoveries are some old stories written by her mother when she was a child. In the stories her mother tells about the Dusties, mysterious little creatures living in the dark corners of the kitchen. At first the cousins think the stories are made up tales. The stories tell of how the Dusties made strange things happen to their family such as when Jimmy John Joe’s tongue kept growing and growing. Soon they begin to fear that these stories are true and search for more clues about the Dusties. While searching for the Dusties they find much more than they bargain for, including people who aren’t really dead, a magical portal into paradise, and an evil person lurking outside to steal something hidden in the house. Near the end Rosie’s life is endangered by this mysterious stranger. She survives and the Dusties help her find the Portal of Paradise where she gets to see two young lovers reunited. THE DUSTIES AND THE PORTALS OF PARADISE is a fun tale for children, but not for those that are too young, because at some points it is a little scary. If you, or your child, enjoy mystical adventures like Harry Potter, you’ll enjoy this fantastic tale.
