Nate the Great and the Crunchy Christmas By Marjorie Weinman Sharmat and Craig Sharmat Illustrations by Marc Simont Bantam Doubleday Dell Books for Young Readers A Yearling Book (November 1997) Paperback 43 pages Children’s mystery $4.50 US

With Christmas just around the corner I thought I’d review a children’s mystery series. If you’re looking for something mysterious for your kids or grandkids, ages 6 to 8, this series is perfect. There are over 20 books in the Nate the Great Detective series each one as delightful as the next. I even enjoy having my 7 year old read them out loud to me. In the CRUNCHY CHRISTMAS Nate agrees to find Fang’s missing Christmas mail. Fang is Annie’s dog. It’s cold and snowy, but Nate and his dog, Sludge, are determined to solve this case in time for Fang to have a crunchy, munchy Christmas. Nate is a charming little sleuth who solves a multitude of important mysteries for children along with Sludge’s help. These mysteries include The Lost List, The Stolen Base, The Phony Clue, The Fishy Prize, and many more. In one book Nate even solves a mystery involving the King of Sweden. The one thing Nate can never solve a case without is pancakes. Just as Sherlock Holmes pipe is to him, pancakes are to Nate the Great. In his dear stocker cap and trench coat, Nate can solve any mystery his friends may bring him. So put a handful of these little mysteries under your tree and your young sleuth will be thrilled.
