This latest outing of Alex's Matthews character, psychotherapist Cassidy McCabe, is delightful. Cassidy decides that her neighbor's cats need rescuing. Her neighbor, Olivia Mallory, known as the cat lady, is a reclusive woman in her forties who never speaks to anyone, but Cassidy tries to win her trust and convince her to find a shelter for the strays.
Cassidy gets more than she bargains for when Olivia ends up dead and Cassidy is faced with finding homes for the cats and finding a killer. She must also face her own guilt at not following her instincts and checking on Olivia the night she was killed.
In the meantime, she must also deal with her husband, Zach Moran's, undercover job for a newspaper story that brings about temporary changes in his personality that are driving her crazy. Zach gets too deeply into his cover persona as he visits one of Chicago's clubs to try and locate the source of coke traffic at the club. This also causes problems for Zach's son, leaving Cassidy to try and placate him until Zach is willing to tell him what's been going on.
Gran comes to the rescue with peanut butter cups and her own talents for snooping. Gran is delightful, spunky, and just what Cassidy needs to help her find the killer. Together they learn that there was much more to her neighbor than they realized, and in the process Cassidy finds homes for all of Olivia's cats.
CAT'S CLAW is a fun read. Cassidy is strong, capable, intelligent and witty. I look forward to going back and reading the previous books in this series and watching her relationship with Zach develop. I especially loved Gran and would love to take her home with me.
