AOL, Compuserve, and Mystery Shopping

We've covered AOL's (America OnLine's) different mystery shopping areas in the past, but we didn't give them very much detail.

Some members of AOL in about late 1994 created a message board for mystery shopping. It grew from a core group of shoppers to a little over one hundred shoppers. At this point, AOL officially 'gave' the mystery shoppers their own area in the Workplace forum. After a year, the WPLC (WorkPLaCe) forum underwent another change when BKH (Business KnowHow) took over the mystery shopping area. My understanding is that currently the forum sees hundreds of posts a week to the message boards as well as holds chats to discuss mystery shopping issues.

During the time that BKH began running the mystery shopping forum, another area on AOL known as MO (MomsOnline) added a mystery shopping area as well. The MO mystery shopping area began to flourish as well.

Now, both areas offer chats, files to download, message boards, links, and mystery shopping leads by companies and schedulers.

I can not say that I have a preference. Both have their good points and bad. Both go through a period of everyone helping everyone else out nicely and then a rough period where it seems everyone is arguing. Both are also heavily moderated. If you can get past that and remember to use them as the resource they are for good information, some very reliable shoppers, and great leads... they are worth the time to peruse.

If you do not have access to AOL's service you will not be able to view these particular forums for mystery shopping. However, do not despair because much of the information is more readily available in several other forums on the internet. It is difficult to find a one stop place that includes as much as the AOL forums allow. You can keep a list of three or four good links though that will cover everything AOL has to offer and much more, like this site. ;)

CompuServe does not have a forum for mystery shopping. I have been looking into that and have not yet found such an area. I've heard rumors that they will offer an area for mystery shoppers, but have not seen it develop over the past year so I do not expect it to happen at this point.

If you have AOL, you can locate their mystery shopping resources by typing in keyword: BKH or keyword: MO and then searching for mystery shopping in the message board areas.
