A lot of people come to me asking about how to get started mystery shopping. Many are stay at home moms who want to take their kids with them to mystery shop. There are so many variables to this, I will try to cover most of them.
You are able to pick and choose assignments from companies once you are in their database of shoppers. If a scheduler calls you to see if you would like a shop they have in your area, ask them if you can take your child(ren). Obviously, you would not take your child to do a bar shop. I personally would not want to take a child with me to do an investment or car dealership shop either. These types of shops are usually quite detailed and require a great amount of attention. Sometimes they can also be rather long. Children and long waits do NOT usually go well together. For the most part, my suggestion is to leave younger kids at home when you are working, which is EXACTLY what you are doing. There are shops that are kid friendly if you really must have them with you. Fast food, grocery store, video store, convenience store, amusement parks, pawn shops, kid stores (like Chucky Cheese), and family style restaurant shops to name a few. Another related issue is what to tell the child. I do not suggest telling a younger child (under ten), about what you are doing. Mostly because kids forget, get excited, and just generally tend to run their mouths a bit too much. Next thing you know, you are having an OK meal trying to get your waitress's name, and your child starts telling her how badly she is doing on mommy's test. Older children (over ten) are generally great shoppers. They love to eat out, and will get someone's name without near as much trouble as we adults seem to have doing it. People do not suspect older kids like they might an adult. Basically, it's your business. It's up to you. Check with the company when accepting assignments though to find out their kid policy.
