Alexandra Walters series #2

Alexandra Walters is a gospel singer. She loves mysteries, has a cat named Watson and a puppy named Sherlock. She adores Frank Sinatra. She takes in boarders at her home in Donlyn, CA to help make ends meet. She can't live without her 4-year-old daughter, Jessica.

Alexandra returns home to find her ex-husband, Mike, and his new bride, Leslie, waiting for her. Mike wants custody of Jessica, whom he hasn't seen since he left the marriage, and he and Leslie are willing to fight for it.

Mike is the lead tenor in the Arkansas Boys group, in town to participate in the first annual Singfest West Gospel Music Convention. He has quite a reputation with the ladies and rumors abound that marriage hasn't cured his bad habits. When an old friend asks Alex to emcee the convention, the tension between her and her ex-husband heat up dramatically. When a shooting occurs hours before the convention opens, Alex becomes the main suspect of the new head of detectives, Sergeant Will Wright.

With the help of her boyfriend, Stephen Calucci, a private investigator with unwanted ties to the Mafia, and Nicholas Patrese, a local well-known crime king, Alex begins her own search for the real killer. There is a plethora of suspects, including: Zach, an old friend of Alex's, seen arguing with the victim right before the shooting; Harry, the victim's business partner, lucky enough to have a nice size insurance policy on the victim's life; Jacki, Harry's singer wife, with a penchant for gathering other people's belongings; and Fayline, a young and pretty rising star, with a secret she's been unwilling to share about the victim.

Yet another murder points Sergeant Wright back in Alex's direction. Now it's a race against time and the police. The prize? Not only Alex's freedom but custody of Jessica.

The story is well paced and hard to put down. However, a multitude of characters may have you flipping back to earlier pages to identify who's who. The plot, murder victims, and the murderer are predictable but the music convention background makes it interesting and keeps you turning pages.

The first book in the series, Murder in Four Part Harmony, is also available. For sample chapters of both books and information on the author, gospel singer Lorie Ham, click here.
