The first book in the new Mulberry House series, I Desire Mercy introduces Marietta Mulberry, a 40-something retired librarian. Forced into retirement and led by the voice of the Lord (The Voice), Marietta creates a foundation. Operation WILL is "a secret task force for the mobilization of God's justice, mercy and redemption." Headquartered at the family home Mulberry House, Operation WILL operates in the newly renovated cellars, accessible only by a secret spiral staircase. In her first case, Marietta hurls herself into danger as she tries to find out the reason behind an epidemic of Alzheimer's disease that has hit the under-65 citizens of her hometown, Rock Landing.

In the throes of dementia, a war buddy of Marietta's father Devon mutters, "Dragon's Tail! It got Dev!" This perplexes Marietta as her father had died from Alzheimer's. Aided by her twenty-something assistant, Brianna Bishop, and Philip Wickens, her 70-something groundskeeper and an old friend of Marietta's deceased father, Marietta begins her investigation at the town's nursing home, run by the town's only doctor, Jarod Stanley. A break-in at her home and mysterious lights on the river at night behind her house further puzzle Marietta. Are these events connected to the nursing home? Is the chemical plant, where her father once worked involved? Was her father Devon involved? What is the connection between the nine Alzheimer's patients? With the help of some neat high-tech gadgets, Marietta continues her investigation straight into danger and risks her life to find the answers.

Admittedly, the plot and outcome are predictable. The Voice of the Lord can be jarring to the reader. The escapades of Marietta and her task force may stretch credibility but, all in all, this is a cute little mystery. If you grew up with Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, and the Hardy Boys, you will enjoy it.
