Academic Mysteries-Part 1

Sarah Deane, English professor, aided by Alex McKenzie, physician, are featured in the series by J.S. Borthwick, the pseudonym for Joan Scott Creighton. This series has less literary allusions but are no less intelligent in content and conversation. When the series begins with The Case of the Hook-Billed Kites, Sarah is a graduate student. She meets Alex in Texas after the death of her boyfriend. The series continues with The Down East Murders, when Alex and Sarah meet up again on their native turf of Massachusetts and take to investigating murder. The series now contains ten books. The Garden Plot, the eighth book, features Sarah and her Aunt Julia taking a garden tour in England and France which was to be led by an old friend of Sarah's but is killed before the group boards the plane. My Body Lies Over the Ocean, the next book in the series, features Sarah, Alex, and Aunt Julia on their way home from Europe via ocean liner. The latest release, Coup de Grace, depicts life at a boarding school as Sarah, the proud owner of a brand new Ph.D. in English literature, accepts a temporary teaching position at Miss Merritt's just in time to stumble upon the murder of another teacher. Ms. Borthwick's characters are well developed and her mysteries are nice and cozy.

Paula Glenning is not only an English professor but an author. She is messy and sloppy in her habits. She'd rather have love affairs than marriage. She made her debut in Last Judgment in 1985. The series, written by Anna Clarke, has nine books. The latest book, The Case of the Anxious Aunt, was released in 1996. These books, difficult to locate, have a nice easy-going pace and a cozy approach.

Joan Smith, a British author and journalist, has written five mysteries featuring Loretta Lawson, an English professor and ardent feminist. These books--A Masculine Ending, Why Aren't They Screaming?, Don't Leave Me This Way, What Men Say, and Full Stop--are difficult to locate but are worth the effort.

Academic Mysteries--Part 2 features non-English professors, school teachers, and others.
